Big news will always upset charts.   Charts are great for stable situations.   Any impulse hitting a stable system will always cause change.   This get far worse when system is small or impulse is large.   This is not just the stock market.   It is a storm  on the sea.  A car being hit while cruising the highway.  An elaborate control system when sudden change hits it.    A large tree falling in a forest.   This does not mean it cannot be predicted or planed for.  It just means to predict it and plan you must look past the system itself.     This is the number one problem with charts they are great at predicting the future as long as future is like past.   Any disruption cause the system to fail.
