I think Germany already has massive problems with the power grid and the energy prices are one of the highest in the world. They really have to do something after investing so much money in wind and solar. Who knows, they might build massive batteries.
But there is also hydrogen and the fuel cell technology, that might become a viable alternative to lithium batteries.
