Actually, there are many of these people who lost or sold their Bitcoin. For example, there was that tech journalist in the UK who mined 7,500 Bitcoins back when they were worth nothing and you could mine on a laptop. He clearly mined them for gimmicky reasons, as he forgot he had them and threw out his hard drive. Years later when he realised how much Bitcoin was now priced at, he started hopelessly searching the trash yard.
This is an example of somebody who valued Bitcoin very little. If he valued it a lot more when he mined it, he would have done backups, and not thrown it out.
