I myself have a more practical view, ie; relentless shorting by an insto who borrowed the shares from a major holder, holder pressures company to raise funds giving the insto an out and holder buys a chunk of the company at a much lower price, possibly even lobs a bid at the company.
Worst case scenario for them is insto is happy to make money and will help them do it to other companies in future and major holder buys some more shares on the cheap to increase holding after making some income renting out the shares.
Win/win for them as holder would never have sold out anyway so they don't need to worry to much about market price if end game is try to own the whole pie.
