I have been giving this some thought. I was thinking along the same lines as you for a while, but we need to be comparing apples with apples.

Whilst it is great to be able to call for 1c a minute through Google, this doesn't include the data costs ($5 a day for Vodafone for example to access data) in some countries access to Wifi is so slow/difficult compared to 3/4G (Bosnia is one example)

So for me, if I needed to make a call I would happily cop the 10mb per minute, particularly seeing that it is likely that I will be able to get at least 100MB free, sure if I want to have a long winded conversation I will just wait for wifi, but having the option to call whenever I want- without the restriction of having to find a cafe with free wifi it is worth the premium.

Also- the cost would be offset simply by being able to use uber and avoid the taxi ripoff merchants all over the world
