Many in this forum seems to write 'cheaper overseas doctors'. There is a fundamental lack of understanding of the ophthalmology practice. To be able to practice as an ophthalmologist in private you should have passed the FRANZCO exam. The Royal Australia and NZ college of ophthalmologists (RANZCO) is one of the most restrictive to overseas trained doctors - they block an OTD getting trough the system where possible. Secondly to avail of Medicare benefits in private in Australia, an overseas trained doctor(OTD) should have 10 years of practice (10year moratorium rule)- so for an OTD to be able to work in Australia as an ophthalmologit they should 1) undergo specialist assessment - and be found to be at least partially comparable to australian standards -most dont get past this barrier and are advised that they are not comparable 2) If found assessable then undertake at leasst 2 years of supervised and peer reviewed practice 3) pass the Fellowship (FRANZCO) exam 4) have then worked a total of 10 years in Australia
and they dont come cheap - because the Australian gov/private sector does not discriminate once a person has met all requiremnts- so they all charge the same
