    Oakajee project meets initial capacity targetKATE EMERY, The West Australian

    The developer behind WA's $4 billion Oakajee deepwater port says they have enough support from Mid West miners to meet initial capacity of 35 million tonnes a year.

    In a significant milestone for the project, Oakajee Port & Rail said it had received nominations for more than the initial stage one capacity proposed for the port.

    "This takes the project to a new level of confidence in terms of economic viability, which is great news for the range of stakeholders who have given such outstanding support to the development of the Oakajee project," OPR chief executive John Langoulant said in a statement.

    "It also demonstrates that there is potential to expand the project beyond its initial stage 1 capacity."

    Miners chasing space at Oakajee include Murchison Metals, which has a half stake in the project along with Japan's Mitsubishi, and Gindalbie Metals.

    However, it remains unclear how many of the miners who want space at the port by 2013-14 will have the projects in production by the time the port is up and running.
