I think you will find most environmentalists are against the widespread burning of fossil fuels to the point where we irreversibly alter the climate of the planet. I imagine fewer of them would be against using fossil fuel based derivatives for some of the purposes you mentioned.
One thing you didn't mention - how do we make steel without coking coal?
If you were following the news you would know that solar PV is now highly competitive at the domestic level.
I would also bet that a new wind farm would now produce energy more competitively, in Australia, than a new coal-fired power station. But we will never know, because, basically, there ain't gonna be any new coal fired power stations! When the chips are down and the wholesale price is low, wind power will put coal-fired power out of business because of its lower marginal cost of production.
Why are so many wind farms held up by legal challenges? Because of misinformation put out by reactionary groups like the Landscape Guardians and the previously named Waubra Foundation, or whatever it was they called themselves prior to being told to piss off by the entire town of Waubra.
As for greens advocating 'death on a distressing scale', from your comments I imagine you are also signed up to the ludicrous watermelon theory? Why not just call them communists and terrorists and be done with it?
