I already use shapeways.com (an established 3d printing marketplace for crafts and things) which uses industrial strength printers and allows anyone to submit designs available for anyone else. From memory they already went through a couple rounds of cap raising. I don't think 3d printing will become a 'household' function anytime soon since the key obstacle is actually the IP process of the 3d design - and enforcement of ownership of that design.
To give an idea of the volume/market so far (and I think shapeway is already the leader in consumer space), between my last 2 orders (3 months apart), their invoice # incremented by about 1.2 mil - and if you estimate $50 average order size and disregard cancellations, that's annual revenue of 200m just in B2C space.
Currently as it stands unless for speed/efficiency reasons one doesn't need to own a printer outright and would use some printer companies instead.
