WASHINGTON (SBG) — Senate Republicans defeated the Green New Deal, a sweeping climate change resolution introduced by freshman Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez of New York and championed by Democrats.
The legislation was widely expected to fall short of the 60 votes needed to advance. Three Democrats and one Independent senator joined Republicans in opposing the Green New Deal, Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Doug Jones of Alabama, Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona and Angus King of Maine.
The final vote was 0-57. The remaining 43 Democrats voted "present," a tactic that allowed them to avoid taking a formal position on the controversial measure.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., scheduled the vote to put Democrats on the record ahead of the 2020 presidential election supporting a proposal that he characterized as a "socialist daydream" that would hurt the U.S. economy.
"I could not be more glad that the American people can learn where their senators stand on this radical idea. Hard-working Americans will see if their senators want to suffocate their livelihoods," McConnell said Monday.
