    Gas technology tests
I refer to “Burning questions” in The Weekend Australian Magazine, 4/6). The CSIRO-derived underground coal gasification technology is superior to other UCG technologies trialled in Queensland and has solved the operational difficulties that have caused contamination on other sites. Carbon Energy’s UCG technology has been examined and has passed every test.
The history of environmental difficulties with UCG is generally caused by operating the technology at too shallow a depth. The key is to control the pressure of the product gas so that it never exceeds the pressure of the surrounding groundwater. When the surrounding water pressure is greater than the reaction pressure, the products of UCG are contained within the reaction zone and do not escape.
It is not surprising that CSG proponents reacted negatively to UCG. Where UCG requires groundwater pressure to be maintained, CSG requires a basin-wide removal of water from the aquifer to allow the methane gas to migrate. Of course CSG proponents would not want UCG proponents to be able to stop them from draining the regional aquifer.
