Another point – compliance. (A bit unrelated to side-effects - but a further potential advantage of PPS over other treatments.)
One of the challenges with any chronic condition is patient compliance i.e. do patients take their medication regularly and ‘as the doctor prescribed’. Anyone who has tried to take a full 7 days of antibiotics will know how tough it is to remember those last few tablets. And even harder to keep on taking something continuously such as blood pressure medication or statins for cholesterol. Even asthma patients struggle to remember to take their preventer on a daily basis. All at a commercial cost to the manufacturer - as it simply delays when patients front up to the pharmacy for their next script.
In osteoporosis (not osteoarthritis) - treatment was initially limited to daily medication. Once daily treatments did well – but then once monthly emerged – and became very popular. Now the leading treatment for osteoporosis….by a long way….is….a 6 monthly injection! Prolia from AMGEN.
Patients like it – as they don’t have to bother remembering their daily tablet. GPs like it – as it brings the patient back into the surgery twice a year – handy for review, providing repeat prescriptions for other drugs e.g. cholesterol meds - which typically last 6 months. Everyone wins.
So – with PPS – it ‘works’ – may modify the disease process directly - has known safety and side-effects – and compliance will be way better than oral treatments.
(My opinion only - don't trust me, I ain't no doctor or financial advisor...DYOR etc etc....but I do try and see both sides of the picture...but PAR is making it difficult)
