OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma LP and members of the wealthy Sackler family that own the company have reached a $US270 million ($378 million) settlement to resolve a lawsuit accusing the drugmaker of fuelling an opioid abuse epidemic.
    Key points:
    • Oklahoma's Attorney-General accused Purdue Pharma of downplaying opioid addiction risks
    • Purdue's legal team argued labels featured a warning about the risk of opioid abuse and misuse
    • The lawsuit was due to go to a trial before a jury in May
The settlement in the case, which was brought by the US state of Oklahoma, was unveiled by Attorney-General Mike Hunter on Tuesday.
It was the first to result from a wave of recent lawsuits accusing Purdue of deceptively marketing painkillers, helping create a deadly crisis sweeping the US.
Mr Hunter's 2017 lawsuit was set to go to a jury on May 28 in what would have been the first trial to result from roughly 2,000 lawsuits filed in federal and state courts nationwide against Purdue and other drugmakers.
Mr Hunter alleged Purdue, Johnson & Johnson and Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd engaged in deceptive marketing that played down the risks of addiction associated with opioids while overstating their benefits, contributing to the epidemic.
Opioids, including prescription painkillers, heroin and fentanyl, were involved in a record 47,600 overdose deaths in 2017 in the US, according to the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
