Not that the practice's long-running record of helping sovereigns swat away arbitration claims slowed down in 2017. The group's streak of winning favorable results on behalf of states stretched to 27 with a tribunal's October dismissal of claims made against the Czech Republic, said practice head Paolo Di Rosa. The country was defending allegations made by a German solar power firm that a Czech electricity tax violated an international treaty.

"At first you could say they got lucky with the tribunals, they got lucky with the facts, but at this point you really can't attribute it to luck anymore," Di Rosa said of the streak.

In total, the firm's sovereign clients have been required to pay just $27 million out of $4.8 billion — or 0.57 percent — of claims investors have taken to the International Center for the Settlement of Investment Disputes, according to the firm's statistics.

The practice team, stocked with native Spanish speakers and former government officials, has long been sought after by sovereign clients in Latin America. But its global reputation has earned it new business from European and Asian nations fending off arbitration claims.

Among the 15 international arbitrations the firm took on in 2017 are cases defending the Philippines and Thailand, both new clients. The Philippines is fending off multibillion-dollar claims lodged by Shell over a dispute about oil and tax concessions, while Thailand has been hit with an arbitration claim from Australian mining company Kingsgate over a gold mine venture.
