Media CEOs in Canberra push for reforms

The heads of Australia's major media networks will gather in Canberra on Wednesday in a bid to pressure the parliament to speed up sector reforms.

Chief executives from more than 25 free-to-air and subscription TV, newspaper and radio companies, including News Corp, Fairfax Media, Foxtel, Seven West Media and Macquarie Media will hold a summit in the federal capital on May 31.
The meeting will also be attended by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Communications Minister Mitch Fifield.
"The industry is making an unprecedented show of support to send a strong message to Parliament that urgent changes are required to modernise Australia's outdated media laws," a media invitation to the event said.

Earlier this month, the federal government announced a media reforms package that included ownership rule changes, axing licence fees in exchange for a spectrum use fee and restrictions on gambling advertising during live sporting events.
The reforms also include a reduction in the number of sports on the anti-siphoning list and a review of local content.

However, the coalition has so far failed to win Senate support to abolish the two-out-of-three rule, that prevents a company controlling more than two of the three media segments - radio, television and newspapers - in one market, with the opposition Labor party calling for the measure to be separated from the reform package.

Mr Fifield has continued to negotiate with key Senate crossbenchers as well as Labor on the plan.
