yes BG can keep extending the offer.
I think they can continually extend the offer, and I vaguely remember a company extending an offer for a total period of up to 6 months.
I think there is a limit on the number of times an extension can me made.

Shell will probably sell into the bid on the last day of the bid.
BG will extend the bid, but wait until the very last minute.
Shell will not want to run the risk of not accepting the bid, and lose the opportunity of receiving $8.00 per share minimum.
