let me soapbox some more: if the govt is going to get involved in the energy space (to try to compel the energy companies to make less profit), then it follows the govt needs to get involved directly with the big four banks to lower their profits (for the benefit of the consumers, of course)

Yes..spot on..the govt and the ACCC and the media have a lot to answer for. There are a lot of industries they have their fingers all over....electrical generationand retailing, gas production and retailing, pipelines, electrical trasmission, healthcare, childcare, pharmaceutical, banks, fund managers, insurance and they want to get even more involved in fuel.
