Hello T...yes I do agree with your comment on expanded graphite, but I was referring to high purity natural flake graphite and not expanded natural flake. Wellman produced a compression moulded bi-polar plate beginning in 2005 using high purity natural flake, but later shelved the project and moved to expanded graphite due to improved higher DBP, PSD, and lower S.
In fact, expanded graphite producers were able to produce a high purity expanded graphite 99.95 that enabled producers to use a wider variety of polymers and resin blends to manufacture thinner plates and more precise flow fields, thus increasing the number of plates in a stack.
