It's an absolute no brainer IMO. If they can draw energy from uneconomical coal reserves that will never be tapped in our lifetime ,if ever without UCG , as the long term aim is to drift away from thermal power.

The adani project in the Bowen basin is looking shakey wrt feasibility considering where the price per tonne of thermal coal is currently sitting; $16 billion dollar project to which most of the Queensland tier 1 construction industry is hoping will happen and hinging much if there turnover on, as near all of the Coal seam gas gas process plant cash cow projects are now completed, both of which are enviromentally invasive from the surface down

UCG doesn't screw up the underground watercourses and water samples taken from the caverns have been tested and coming back as 'stock'.

I've read a few posts going on about fracturing of the cap rock....I look at bore logs at a regular basis... Fracturing of 'cap rock' as they call it, at that depth ; would have zero effect on structural integrity of the overlying strata .

I personally can't see it being knocked back, I've spoken to quote a few in the CSG side whom are well up the ladder; their view is it would solve a whole lot of issues

    All IMO
