THE Australian market is hungry for gas, and the west will pay a huge part in providing the supply, according to Energy Minister Dr Anthony Lynham.
A number of companies will soon start exploring more than 6600km2 of Queensland, much of it in the south west, he said on Wednesday.
"The latest blocks for exploration are in key gas-producing regions throughout the Surat and Bowen Basins.”
"There is also an area with significant potential in the Eromanga and Adavale basins.”
The gas will supply the east coast and export markets, inlcuding Armour Energy, which is working on domestic supply and will be based south of Surat.
Chi Oil and Gas will explore 5266km2 near Quilpie, in the Eromanga and Adavale Basins, while Senex and Central Petroleum will be prospecting in the Surat basin.
Cypress Petroleum and Bridgeport Energy will both be prospecting near Tara.
