Gold coins held in a bank deposit box or two are a good idea for some people because they can be "off the radar" and can be sold one at a time to meet any necessary expenses.
There are always risks. Safe deposit boxes could get robbed and the Federal Government can always mandate close reporting by registered dealers. Counterparty and electronic marketplace risk could also be an issue .
Burying or hiding gold coins is a bad idea but it make for some intriguing finds. Some are discovered hundreds or indeed thousands of years after being hidden.
