West Wits announced on 12 January 2016 that equipment at its Derewo River Gold Project in Papua Province, Indonesia ("Derewo") had been damaged. Since this incident the Company has held many meetings with the Company’s local partners, PT Intan Angkasa Aviation ("PTIA") to establish how security of the equipment became compromised but more importantly now understand the plans and strategies to be implemented to ensure such an incident cannot happen in the future. West Wits continues to re-iterate that any solution must include plans for complete removal of the illegal mining population.
Throughout these meetings PTIA has continued to reaffirm its commitment to the project and is developing a revised security strategy for Derewo. The strategy includes how the removal of the illegal population will occur.
