I been observing a new AMCAL Pharmacy in a large eastern Melbourne suburban centre for a few months now and they must be losing money bigtime...the store is well set up but not a soul about given their prime position next to Woolworths yet the Priceline store at back end of the centre has been buzzing with activity ever since it opened and busier last weekend with perfumery Christmas sales... the queue was amazingly very very long I should have taken a fuzzy photo. too many faces to blur, unfortunately. It always busy. One of new Pharmacist I know was an employee of a former Camberwell Pharmacy which went into receivership when Sigma shortened credit terms a few years back.
Not sure why SIG should be pushing the Discount Drugstore idea... not a good idea unless you want to help the big supermarkets get into the business too. Priceline got a better model imo and more convenient inside central shopping centres whereas CW is usually in the main street stand-alone locations. Maybe CW have seen a shift and want to get some of their money out to asx speculators?
