If they take off? Jant fair dinkum take a look overseas, they have taken off years back! Oz is typically lagging behind, mainly due to govt not assisting in any shape or form. I keep mentioning Norway and what an example of smarts, 45% ev on the road and 65% ev or hybrid. Sure we have different driving situations in Oz with distances etc, but thats being overcome with ev development. The world is evolving, and I embrace it.
What I'd love to see is gridlock abolished for good, and it's not all that difficult to achieve if only people changed their attitudes. 1 person per car in peak hour is so dumb dumb dumb. I'd love to see govt have the kahoonas to legislate change, ie maybe odd number rego's on certain days, and even on others, or maybe user pays for road use, excluding tradies and other services. Lets see how many single person peak hour cars are on the road when theres an additional price to pay. If we can reduce peak hour by 30% and alter attitudes can you imagine the billions saved to spend on infrastructure.
Whilst you remain a warming skeptic Jant you will never support ev's, as was shown by your comparison of 55mpg ice cars, as you made zero mention of pollutants. Don't they matter?
An ev can charge very comfortably over night if required on slow charge at home, but with 500klm range these days (similar to ice cars), once a week charge would probably suffice with most users. You should hop on facebook with a Norwegian and see how they manage their ev and charging?
As for grid, I'd love to see the day when the service gets snipped from the home. Perhaps mini solar farms and batteries supplying a cluster of homes (10-15?) in the burbs, with each home chipping in for costs. Each home designated with own battery supply and usage data.
