cjs, you would have had to have bought VBA shares prior to the trading halt to be eligible, ie. on or before 24 July.
If you bought when trading resumed on Wed 29 July or later, you were too late. The settlement date of that trade would have been 3 August, well after the record date. You don't become the reigstered owner of the shares until settlement. There are also other eligibility requirements like having a registered address in Australia or NZ, but if you failed these I think you would have got a letter saying you were ineligible.
