They are definitely taking the decentralized approach seriously. WA is big, real big, could swallow Vic, NSW and SA up a couple times over with room to spare. Having poles and wires is just completely ludicrous financially as well as on an efficiency basis. The cost for maintenance, upgrades and losses is just massive so they are thinking smarter and making their plan a reality. Good on them for being proactive and ensuring a more reliable system for their users. As a Sandgroper I can see the Western Power/ EMC partnership going a long long way.
