First coal load leaves Airly Mine
    Posted April 26, 2010 07:23:00

Map: Capertee 2846 A new $130 million coal mine near Lithgow, in central western New South Wales, has reached a major milestone.

The first train-load of coal has been transported from the Airly Mine at Capertee to Port Kembla and will eventually be shipped to South Korea.

The mine currently has 28 staff and is expecting to employ 135 people when it reaches full capacity in one year.

The managing director of Centennial Coal, Bob Cameron, says the first shipment marks the official start of production.

"It is signifying that the mine is up and running," he said.

It's taken us about a year to construct and this is the first coal to leave the mine site.

"In about 12 months' time we'll be at about 1.1 to 1.2 million tonnes per year and over the following six months it will gradually rise to the full 1.8 million tonnes."

Mr Cameron says it is important to note that no coal is leaving by truck.

"This rail system is the distribution route for the coal to eventually end up in South-East Asia," he said.
