"Believe me, the charts tell me they haven't struck anything yet"
Unless there are leaks from the ship, of course the chart wont show anything. The chart may show an increase in volume and spike in price prior to news as insiders get set, this may indicate movement.
If the ship is tight, the volume and break out will be illustrated on the chart, (which usually goes hand in hand with news)
If it breaks out on solid news, there is always ample opportunity to jump on for a ride.
See below for the SIR chart where for 2 years it shows no indication of a find (hence price movement)
The following week (not shown in this chart) there was a trading halt and a break out after the announcement. Only then did the chart truly reflect its buying opportunity.
Note below, so this illustrates that the chart prior to 'big news' may not reflect sufficiently 'to buy or sell".
