Trust me drilling for oil is 100 times harder than drilling shallow mineral exploration...
I will let you know the difference...oil drilling is considered to be one of the riskiest of all drilling as if you have so called oil at surface flowing this is described in the industry as a kick..as you drill into these formations and you get any type of gains you need to shut it the well and control this fluid..as part of the drilling surface equipment a b.o.p is used to shut in and divert any lets say flow...there are multiple size holes starting from surface down to these pay zones and all this drilled over balanced using fluid/mud to keep back any un wanted pressure with oil there can also be gas, so ol mate having a smoke has now burned down the rig....
Ok with out goin any more onto oil drilling, let's talk about the easiest forms of drilling, r.c air drilling to find our beloved cobalt, this my friend is the most simple drilling so to speak, hook up a compressor to the drill string and let her rip, now if the geo has key targets of formation the drillers offsider will be sampling every meter drilled around those targets, these drill chip samples will be use to conduct co, ni, grades and what else the lab is set out to report, now as far as depth goes they might only have to drill say 60mt until they find a basement type of formation where they stop and move to next hole. All the samples are layed out on the ground for geo to take to lab..rig moves on...very fast simple way of determining what rock your drilling into.
If your after core samples of a specific zone this is a bit longer process and more expensive, without knowing exactly what pgm drilled and to what depths i couldn't explain costs, but I have been in the drilling industry for quite some time and we don't know what management here are doing yet for finding as they haven't announced it yet.........hey we might get a sale from tin who knows.
