Yes, the vast majority do not achieve good results. For a start, unlike you, most investors? don't research and spend more time selecting a shirt. They're really punting or trying to trade the zigs and zags as mentioned, which I agree is not generally viable.
I know value investors that have done well over time, but very few if any, including myself, that had lasting success with trading.
No doubt some advisory services are good, others not so great; financial news, interviews, ASX company reports also unearth some good ideas. As Montgomery likes to point out majority of listed companies are unprofitable; IMO we need good investment criteria based on the profitable companies with good prospects and sound balance sheets.
