Agree about the understanding of their business. Agree about taking a punt. I however have moved away from the large companies. True they have often monopoly type of businesses(oil and gas, iron ore, banks, telecom etc) but they also carry a lot!!!! of dead wood around and are researched to death. There is also no fun/exitement in these companies.
