Sengkang powers up Sulawesi

Sengkang gas and coal-fired power plant (PLTGU) owned by PT Energy Sengkang switched on its second block on Monday, supplying 180 megawatts (MW) to state utility company PT PLN in South Sulawesi, West Sulawesi, and Southeast Sulawesi. Its three generators have a production capacity of 60 MW each.

“The second block is an expansion of the first block which also runs three generators, but with a capacity of only 45 MW each,” said Energy Sengkang executive director, Brian Allan.

Sengkang’s upgrade will be fully connected to South and West Sulawesi grids in the next few days.

“South Sulawesi will have power reserves of around 400 MW,” said Judi Winardi Widjaja, PLN’s general manager in the region, during the opening ceremony for the block in Makassar, SouthSulawesi, on Monday.

PLN South Sulawesi will now have a capacity around 1,300 MW for 1.5 million customers.

PLTGU Sengkang has supplied power, produced by its first block, to the utility companies in South, West, and Southeast Sulawesi since 1997. Until the middle of this year, the PLTGU has supplied 315 MW-electricity to the power plants.

“South Sulawesi will become a region whose electricity supply is much better than other regions,” said Governor Syahrul Yasin Limpo. (fan/ebf)
