I don't think there's too much of a gap in our thinking. My understanding of what Abdu'l-Baha is saying is that this "self-awareness" of the universe is a component of what love is. Our consciousness is a means for God to know and to love Himself, and in a similar symmetry operation, our consciousness is a means for the universe to know and to love itself.
