after recently talking to people who witnessed the damage done at bougainville by rio tinto (cra)and ok tedi by bhp I really don't rate greasing a local politician or police chief as a big deal in a country where it is considered the norm.
when I was old enough to frequent the local watering hole in the early 80's the sp bookie was also the most violent bouncer in the area, he had the publican and local detectives in his pocket and did what ever he wanted, then I moved to Brisbane and not long after the fitzgerald inquiry started and uncovered the dealings of entrepeneurs, crime figures, politicians, and senior police, a year later I moved to w.a. and they had w.a inc where the govt was doing deals with alan bond, and laurie Connell that cost the average taxpayer hundreds of millions of dollars.
so to spend 9 million dollars to take the righteous path in a country that is one of the most corrupt with a partner that was facilitating 500 or so illegal miners and achieve nothing but a new partner after 3 yrs is in my eyes an epic fail of biblical proportions.
