But that doesn't make the target list particularly narrow. Citi has complied a list more than 40 companies that Wesfarmers may or may not cast an eye over. It includes Qantas, Brambles, Amcor, Oil Search, Santos, Caltex, Healthscope, Ramsay Health Care, TPG Telecom, AGL and Seven Group Holdings.
Other targets could be Orica, Bluescope Steel, Fletcher Building, Beach Energy, Dulux, Boral, REA Group, Spark Infrastructure and Nufarm.
