If you look at broker summary on that day, supply usually comes from other instos - so my guess is other hedge funds who want to turn a qucik $ and big holders who use the liquidity event to get out.

My issue with these rebals is that even if you calculate GDX flow perfectly, you'll never know who else is already positioned for the trade.

If GDX has 30m shares to buy, but there's 7 hedge funds and a big holder with 5m shares to sell each... well some folks are gonna have a bad time. AND there's going to be significant overhang as weak hands tries to dispose of excess stock that they never really wanted.

If I wanna do coinflips I might as well go to the Star and get my complimentary drinks and cheap lobster...
