The Blaiken and Svartträsk gold, zinc mines are also a good and illustrative example of the very negative consequences from a short history of mining may occur, among other things, to the environment and our food chains. The mining operations at Blaiken (Ersmarksberget) began in the summer of 2006 and the start of operations in Svartträsk was in autumn 2006. The ScanMining began mining in Blaikengruvan 2007-11-12. Lappland Goldminers Sorsele AB bought the mining operations 2008. Lappland Goldminers performed only production preparatory measures, ie. no ore was broken. Lappland Goldminers Soresle AB's bankruptcy began on 2 February 2, 2012.
The Land and Environmental Court (MMD) in Umeå has decided what needs to be done to clean up after the bankruptcy of the large amounts of toxic metals that have been released from the operations in Blaiken. The decision shows that extensive measures are required to prevent large amounts of toxic metals from leaking into the river Juktån. In total, the cost of the measures is for Blaiken estimated to SEK 230 million. Even with the planned measures, contaminated water will continue to be cleaned from the area under at least 25 years ahead. The cost of this is currently approx. 800 000 SEK per month. This does not include cost of cleaning the lake Blaiksjön, where the residues from the concentration plant are stored.
I estimate the total cost of after-treatment of mining operations in Blaiken and Svartträsk to be at least 550 MSEK (86 MAUD) that Swedish taxpayers have to pay.
Our citizens should not suffer from major financial costs for the remediation of mining operations at the expense of lack of the authorization and regulatory control, as in this case!
PS. I was involved in the new purification plant that was taken into operation at Blaiken in 2014.
