People may drive less to start with but then two things will happen , firstly peoples next car will be bought more with fuel efficiency in mind , ie smaller cars or hybrids. Secondly people will simply become used to paying more for fuel. Thts if prices remain high and that far from a given.
Car use in this society is so ingrained that any lowering of car use is likely to be temporary.
Petrol here costs far less than it does in the UK for example where people tend to drive smaller vehicles
