Well that's some impressive numbers but you are "cherry picking" the periods of data.

A quick check of gold shows it dropping from 1979 through to 2001 ($524 down to $276) and then rising through your data period to $1574 in 2011 to then drop after your data period to $1277 in 2018. If you select a wider period then the increases are far reduced.
1979 to 2018 is $524 to $1277 - so thats hardly an impressive result over almost 40 years - and certainly not 667%. It is a compound growth rate of around 2% per annum and you can get better than that with a term deposit.

The above values are in Aussie $'s

The ASX all ordinaries has gone from around 1665 (in 1992) through to 5552 (in 2018) and if dividend stocks are selected then not only is the value increased significantly over this 26 year period but a typical 4% dividend was paid as well. This is a compound growth rate of 4.75% per annum (not including the 4% dividend) - so this is conceivably a 9-10% average annual return with franking credits.

I couldn't find any info pre 1992 on ASX prices but I think that any professional advisor would agree ASX returns on average are superior to either property or gold.

Having said that Regis's returns have been great over the past 10 years or so and now pays a dividend. Regis's returns have been far better than physical gold.

    Cheers
