Most institutions currently trialing the Ripple Network are using Ripple's xCurrent product. Many will in future use xRapid which will be more efficient and does utilise XRP.

Ripple recently escrowed a large proportion of the XRP it holds (to prevent the market being flooded with XRP) but with a regular monthly release of enough XRP to provide institutional liquidity.
