The Dubbo Council has agreed to lease a parcel of land to a solar energy company for 30 years.

Soleir will develop the 25 hectare block on Boothenba Road for solar power generation and offer sections of it to investors.

The council's manager of commercial facilities Simon Tratt says it will help to develop the city's reputation as being environmentally friendly.

He says the land previously has been used for agriculture but the new development is in keeping with zoning.

"It's actually buffer land around our sewer treatment plant on Boothenba Road," he said.

"So, it's required to be there effectively as buffer land and to date it's been used for agricultural use on a lease basis."

Soleir manager, Rowan Gillespie says the power could be generated for local homes at the site.

"A project of that size would power approximately 2000 homes.

"One of the benefits is all the electricity is consumed within the local community and this really is going to be a showcase for Solair with the intention of replicating this across a number of sites across regional New South Wales."

He says the company has received approval for a two megawatt plant which will be built within the next year.
