As a long term investor, which you clearly are, the question of whether or not it is in your interest to participate in a CR should be a very simple one.

It should be: Will my net proportionate intrinsic value, after paying for my increased stake, be greater than my proportionate intrinsic value prior to the CR?

I fully acknowledge that arriving at an answer can be anything but simple. But this should be the framework.

If the answer to the question is no, but you decide to participate anyway because "Hey, the market price is greater than the CR price so it would be irrational not to participate", then you are speculating.

I might do it myself. I'm making no moral judgements about it. But speculation it is.

You are speculating that the market will continue to appraise the business at above intrinsic value long enough for you to "lock in a profit". If that is not speculation, then what is it?

But then, my sense is you will only be buying for keeps. In which case, whether the CR price is < market price or not, should be irrelevent to you.

The only rational consideration to you, should be the one I previously posed.
