I tried to investigate to see if this is true.
Obviously this is the case for lithium hydroxide but I would think the spodumene would be quite stable, certainly if kept in a dry environment.
i can't post the link on my phone but if you search spodumene on the Canadian encyclopaedia it specifically mentions heating to make the spod more reactive, which suggests some inherent interaction at room temperature.
I'd recommend reading the information anyway. An interesting explanation of conversion, though I'm not sure how dated.
