BOKO EXPRESSES CONCERN ON BCL CLOSING DOWN
FRIDAY, 22 JULY, 2016 - 07:15
BNF leader Duma Boko has expressed concern about reports that government might close down BCL mine in Selebi Phikwe.
Addressing party members in Francistown recently, Boko said if the reports are true, more than 5 thousand people will lose their jobs and increase the already high statistics of unemployment.
He further said the economy of the town will collapse which heavily depends on the copper and nickel mine.
According to state media reports government has formed a ministerial task force headed by mineral minister, Kitso Mokaila, to carry out extensive investigations about the mine which has been facing financial constraints.
Meanwhile, in an interview with the state media, Mokaila said cabinet was approached with options left to address the unusual state of the mine’s business.
The first option questioned whether government should reinvest, looking at how much cash to be injected into the mine, and what this means to other parts of the economy.
The minerals minister said the second option considered placing the mine under care and maintenance.
Mokaila said the last option could be a chance of shutting down operations at the mine, and assessing what impact that could have on BCL business partners and employees.
He says government will make a decision, and the announcement will be made.
