re: 6 dollars for first time in its life "I have pondered this too. I have ARG, AFI and MLT (another excellent LIC) as my core holdings (about 1/3 of my portfolio).
I often wonder why I struggle to match the performance of these 3 long term holdings with the rest of my portfolio."
Reasonable strategy.
My LICs of choice (and in order of preference are) : AUI, DUI, ARG, CHO, MLT, BKI
Nothing wrong with AFI but historically the JBWere LICs were a bit conflicted, I thought. AFI has got better though recently, and I expect its performance to start matching that of ARG long-term.
The core (LICs) / satellite (personal choices) is a good investment model.
Particularly if you always insist on buying LICs at discounts to NTA.
If you are finding that your 'personal' choices underperform, you should bias your portfolio further towards LICs, and make sure that your personal stock picks *do add long term value*. This means that your stockpicks have to be few in number and *extremely focused and researched*. In other words you have developed superior insight into a particular stock.
