Went to a Defence Briefing recently, 12 Commercial Satellites were destroyed by space junk in 2014 and 3 in 2015. For many tier 1 countries, their space assets are their achilles heel, so protection is vital.
If a foreign power took out a countries defence satellites, including GPS, then the Country would be blind and rely on military terrestrial communications and have to rely on sextants!! How many people can use those these days.
The International Space Station has cracked windows from space junk and has armoured cells for the crew in case of imminent space junk.
Australia leads the World in space debris detection and the ONLY company that does it is EOS.
