well someone was asking me the other day, why would anyone still have a margin loan. I explained that people who had been investing for 15 or 20 years, would have a lot of stocks with big profits ( banks, BHP, arg ). From the point of view of the start of the year, selling those stocks and paying CGT would look like a worse idea than a 20 or 30 percent market fall. A 40 or 50 percent fall would be another story.
