Qube opens new mineral sands facility in Bunbury

Bunbury MLA Don Punch officially opened Qube’s new mineral sands facility in Picton on Thursday.
The facility will store and handle 60,000 tonnes of mineral sands for Iluka Resources.
Using the latest generation technology, the in-and-out loading system fast-tracks and automates inbound and outbound cargo handling, maximising truck loads and optimising efficiency.
Qube Bulk director Todd Emmert said the project took shape with great speed.
“All up it has taken less than 12 months to design, fabricate, construct and commission the facility,” he said.
“Despite some unseasonal weather throwing up a few challenges, the facility was delivered in scope, on time and on budget.”
The Qube mineral sands facility has been purpose built to the highest standard with a significant emphasis on productivity and environmental performance.
Some of the features include enclosed cargo receival and delivery, overhead mechanical stacking, enhanced product reclaiming and load out productivities and fully automated doors that minimise emissions.
The new Qube facility covers a 7,500 square metre site and brings the number of Qube off-port storage sheds in Picton to 24.
“Our combined storage capacity in Bunbury is now over 200,000 tonnes,” Mr Emmert said.
“We’re proud to have created a specialised minerals sands precinct to assist the facilitation trade at the Port of Bunbury.”
The project spent nearly $3 million with local contractors, suppliers and services, creating local job opportunities.
