GOLDEN AGE OF SEMICONDUCTOR: ENABLING THE NEXT INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION
Over the past 30 years, our industry has been transformed through cycles of disruptive new applications, sector consolidation, frenzied speculation and its resulting bubbles, and the rise of China. Through it all, prosperity and rational behavior have somehow prevailed. Today, previous leading-edge demand drivers like the PC, Internet, and mobility are being supplemented by AI and other autonomous thinking breakthroughs, engendering a completely connected world where silicon is more pervasive than ever before. We’re at the cusp, the dawn of a new age, where the fruits of our industry’s inventions are becoming ubiquitous, even commonplace. And yet, more is to come.
With the revolutionary potential of cognitive learning, natural language, autonomous vehicles, blockchain, crypto-currencies and other advanced technologies not yet entirely integrated or realized, the dawn has not fully broken. When it does, microelectronics and our world will be radically different. And our industry will have entered the Golden Age of the Semiconductor where new and emerging demand drivers call for new architectures, new logic and memory, and new forms of specialized technologies. Demand will drive stable, sustainable growth, which in turn will attract steady streams of investment and financial rewards to keep our industry moving forward.
Truly, a Golden Age is on the horizon. How do we hasten its arrival and ensure its longevity?
