water will fill from the bottom and take the next opening as it travels back up which is the small space in 3, it will then run down the outside pipe even on the angle, water doesn't concern itself with angles it follows the pipe... go bend a spoon, put it under the tap, the water will still follow the spoon even when bent 90o
